----- Image to Pattern -----

When I started out, I was not sure how I was going to make my patterns. I certainly do not consider myself very good at drawing. So I knew I would need images to help me create my bead patterns. I also knew they could not be just any image, as I did not want to infringe on copyrights.

Well, thankfully I found at least two sources for images I could use, with permission, to create bead patterns. Then I went to work making patterns from these images. Some were .bmp, .gif, .jpg and .wmf. The first step was to reduce a 245 x 205 pixel image to an 88 x ? image without losing too much detail. I usually start by removing unnecessary white areas along the borders, and sometimes I just use a portion of the image (Crop). Once I have the final image, I reduce the size (Resize). For my Mural/Suncatcher patterns, I set the larger dimension to 88, as my beads are large (in comparison). For these patterns, 1 pixel equals 1 bead. It works perfectly.

Then I choose colors and make the final image look nice (they do not always shrink well, but they give you a good starting spot). When I first started out, I did most of this in MS Paint. Once I got BeadCellar http://www.beadcellar.com , it was a little easier as I could replace one color with another, throughout the pattern, with one step. And if two colors are too similar to tell apart and there is only 1 or 2 of one and 500 of the other, the material list lets me know. Then I can easily replace one color with the other.

Once I had created several Mural/Suncatcher patterns, I wanted to create Beaded Curtain patterns. This was my first experience with needing to adjust the image to make the pattern turn out right. Thinking I just needed to turn the image into a pattern (like I do for my M/S patterns) I started my first curtain. After doing the first few strands, I knew something was wrong. The picture looked STRETCHED.

I realized I needed to stretch my image's width by 75%, yes 75%, to get it to be proportionate when beaded up. So I went to work on my second curtain and it came out perfect. (Sorry I do not have more curtain patterns up. There's more to putting them together than I can go into.)

Last year I tried my hand at the Peyote stitch. It was a popular beading stitch and with the smaller beads I could get more detail into a pattern. But I felt I needed to know how to do it before trying to design for it.

Well, I could not get it started. But that did not stop me, having figured out my Diagonal Right Angle Weave just by looking at a piece of jewelry (I never was taught how to bead, I learned on my own), the same thing happened while I was studying the first few rows of the peyote stitch. I figured out a way to add the first 3 rows at once (http://www.facetedbeadart.com/beading-information.html).

This worked perfectly, so I was ready to try a peyote pattern. I then found a nice small Dalmatian pattern to do. However, I was disappointed about half way through when I noticed a slight stretching. It was not nearly as severe as with my beaded curtains, but it was a stretching none the less. For this reason, the poor Dalmatian was only half done - and remains only half done.

After this, I did some research and found that Delica 11/0 beads bead up at 19 beads x 15 beads for a 1" square. That was a 26.6% difference. So now, if I create a peyote pattern (I usually create only for Delica 11/0 beads) I first stretch the width of the image 27%.

Well, recently I did a small betta fish with Lg Delica beads and discovered something very interesting. Although the 11/0 size has a 27% difference when stitched with peyote, the 8/0 size has only an 11% difference. So I decided to do a test...

Here I used 4 bead types commonly used with the Peyote stitch and beaded them up first with my Diagonal Right Angle Weave and then with the peyote stitch. Each is 10 beads wide and 10 beads high. (To see images of the completed pieces visit http://www.facetedbeadart.com/0031-images.html.)

With the Diagonal Right Angle Weave, all came out square. With the Peyote stitch: 11/0 Delica had a 30.77% difference; 10/0 Seed bead had a 43.8% difference; 8/0 Lg Delica had a 11% difference; 9x6 Pony Beads had a 39.7% difference.

So, I realized that with the Peyote stitch, the patterns are not as universal as with my Diagonal Right Angle Weave. This information will come in handy, as I have had requests for Peyote patterns using 9x6 pony beads.

My recommendation to you is...

First choose your bead. Then bead up a small, simple pattern. The pattern should be equal number of beads wide as high (visit http://www.facetedbeadart.com/0031-images.html for one). Once done, use a ruler that can measure in mm and cm. Use this to measure your piece (be as exact as you can be). Now divide your height by your width. You should get a number like 1.2666666E. This means the difference is 26.6E%.

When you go to stretch the width of your image, you will need to tell most image editors NOT to keep the ratio the same. Then where it asks for % to Resize, you will enter 127 (for 1.2666666E or 26.6E%) for your width and make sure your height remains at 100.

NOTE: Do the above stretching after Cropping and the initial Resizing to get the image ready to be turned into a pattern.

----- Complementary Pattern -----

This month's Complementary Pattern is an ornament design that was co-designed with my friend Karen Ricketts. I gave her the original design to let her learn the pattern and give me input and the next thing I knew she had over twenty little Cross Ornaments all set to go for Christmas. I have not put this pattern up at the site, so you will be the first to have it. I do hope you enjoy it.

Pattern is available at my Yahoo Group...

Our new patterns consist of 4 new windsock patterns by Tammy Chevalier and 3 new doily patterns by Karen Ramel. I thank these two ladies for their lovely patterns, as I have not had as much time for designing patterns while I am finishing up the site redesign. I hope you enjoy them.

This months featured patterns are Summer related. Just use the links on the Home Page http://www.facetedbeadart.com to visit each category's Featured Patterns page.
