Faceted Bead Art Gazette December 05, 2003 Issue #0002 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Recently on the thebeadcoopgroup... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thebeadcoopgroup/ there was a discussion on using fishing line in bead work. It was a very interesting discussion and I learned about some different lines people use when beading. The most popular seemed to be PowerPro. (Use this link... http://home.att.net/~ssur/dynema.htm to learn more about PowerPro). PowerPro is a Gel Spun Polyethylene and is great for beading, because it works just like string but is much stronger. However, I found two reasons why I would not use PowerPro. 1) It is $11.99 for 100 yards 10lb test, and I can get the monofilament line I use (Stren High Impact) for $5.99 per 1000 yards 12lb test. 2) I also could not find a transparent version, and I highly recommend transparent (or clear) line when creating FacetedBeadArt. 1) STIFFNESS. When I created my first two projects, The American Flag 3 ft. x 5 ft. and The Christian Flag 3 ft. x 5 ft., I used 20 LB TEST monofilament line. While true that AT THIS WEIGHT the line was a bit stiff, it was still pliable enough to work with. I did find, however, that knotting was a bit more difficult due to the thickness of the fishing line. The 12 LB TEST I recommend for all available FacetedBeadArt patterns, I feel is VERY PLIABLE and knots well with a single knot combined with a double overhand knot (see Diagonal Version of the 2 Needle RAW Technique... http://www.facetedbeadart.com/instructions.html bottom page 4 for details). 2) BREAKS DOWN OVER TIME. This is a concern I too have thought about. As for my experiences with monofilament line... I find that it is very durable. My first project, The American Flag, was begun 15 years ago and I see no signs of the fishing line breaking down. I have also done little experiments of my own and found that even when exposed to the elements (wind, rain, sun and snow) it stood strong for two years and showed no signs of breaking down. So, I have come to the conclusion that monofilament fishing line will not break down any more than another thread you might use in your bead art. However, should you still be concerned about this, I would suggest that you place your FacetedBeadArt inside your home in a place that does not get much sun. This in my opinion, will reduce any chances of the fishing line breaking down. 1) NO NEEDLE NEEDED. The consistency of the monofilament line allows you to bead without a needle. This makes for one less item to have to have. 2) TRANSPARENCY. All the faceted beads used in FacetedBeadArt are transparent and the combination of the two makes for a stunning effect. People ask, "How are the beads held together?" One person noted, "It looks as if the beads are suspended in thin air." Also, if you decide to hang your FacetedBeadArt in a window, a colored thread would take away from the stained glass effect that you get using monofilament fishing line. 3) DOES NOT TANGLE EASILY. At the lengths used in most FacetedBeadArt patterns, I have found that I very rarely have to untangle the fishing line (about once in a year). 4) CONVENIENCE. Using fishing line with the stitch in FacetedBeadArt: The Basics, enables you to stop in the middle of a row without worrying about your work coming undone (as long as it is out of the reach of animals and children). When a row is started (about an inch or two), it can be set aside or stored without the risk of coming undone. There is one catch though, you must thread through the next bead of the previous row. This step holds the string in place (very important). 5) STURDINESS. The durability of the fishing line permits you to fold your work this way and that or roll it up and stuff it into a bag without worrying about it falling apart on you (or even having the unfinished row come undone).
