Faceted Bead Art Gazette December 30, 2004 Issue #0014 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ About Delicas... http://beadwork.about.com/cs/beadsdelicaseeds/bb/bybdelicas.htm At the above link, you will find answers to questions such as... What is a Delica Bead? Why use them? How much do they cost? View Sample Cards Online. These are very good sample cards with large images showing you the color and look of the beads. http://www.foxdendesigns.com/Delicas.htm Sites where I have purchased Delica Beads... http://www.foxdendesigns.com and http://www.about-beads.com I had very good experiences with both places and would highly recommend them. I am working on my first pattern with the peyote stitch. Before a month ago, I would look at instructions for peyote and go "No Way". But recently I downloaded Designs by Deb's new e-book "2-PAGES OF BEADING INFO" (http://www.thebeadcoop.com/pattern.asp?PatternID=6934) and when I looked at her explanation of the peyote stitch I went "I can do this". So, I got myself a small pattern and went to work. After three tries, I found I was unable to get the tension right. With peyote, you string on Rows 1 and 2, then string on row 3's beads while threading intermittently through Row 2's beads. As you go, this tightens up the beads and can make them curl. Not being able to fix this problem, I thought of a new way to do the first three rows. I folded my string in half and put Row 1's beads on the left string, Row 3's beads on the right string, then threaded both strings together through Row 2's beads. With this process the beads tended to just line up, so I had to go back and fix Row 1's beads so that they were on top of Row 3's beads and Row 2's beads lined up in front of them. I am hoping to write this up for others to use. If you are interested in these directions, please e-mail me ( shellwcross@facetedbeadart.com ). This will help me to find the time I need to write them up and make them available for you. What are they? Here I will let Carolyn of Silverhill Design ( http://www.silverhilldesign.com/ ) give her definition... "Bead patterns are nearly always presented as graphic charts - a drawing of how the beads will look when woven that is big enough for the beader to be able to weave the beads by looking at the chart, counting the number of beads of a particular color to string, and then weaving them together as shown. An issue arises (to which I can attest from personal experience!) when the beader mis-counts. (I have strung on 150 beads for some big loom pattern only to discover that it should have been *3* gold beads way back at the beginning of the row, not *2* beads like I put on...) One way designers combat this problem is to do "Word charts". There are a number of variations on this theme, but basically, each row is listed with the number of beads in each color to string to complete the row. So the beader doesn't have to count (with the risk of mis-counting). All the counting is done for you. So, for example, the first row in a Word chart might state: Row 1: DB077(5) DB351(4) DB310(2) which would mean that for the first row, you would weave 5 beads of Delica color #077 and then 4 beads of Delica color number 351 and finally two beads of Delica color number 310. I love Word charts and include them in all my patterns. I find that when I bead, I use primarily the Word chart, but also refer to the graph periodically just to check where I am and that the pattern is moving along correctly." Carolyn Additional comments on Word Charts... A lot of word charts combine Rows 1&2, as these are usually strung on together. Also, some word charts flip alternating rows. This is because each row starts at the opposite end of the pattern. With Alternating rows flipped, you are able to read the word chart from left to right throughout. These patterns use selected Delica colors that are transparent and not known to fade in sunlight. (See http://www.foxdendesigns.com/Delicas.htm for durability ratings.) And when strung together with 4 lb clear fishing line, they make stunning suncatchers. Since I am new to peyote, I am having one of my first patterns beaded up by Pam of Looner Creations ( http://www.loonercreations.com ). As soon as it is done, I will be putting up a picture in the Gallery area at my web site. These new patterns are available only at TheBeadCoop.
