----- Using Other Bead Stitches -----

I have had several people ask me if my patterns could be done up in other bead stitches, mainly square.

Trysch, my most recent inquirer, asked...

Hi! Before I get started, I noted that you recommend doing the pattern on the vertical. I do a lot of RAW jewelry, and have never worked on the vertical. Why is this a better way than just going straight up and down the piece????

Thanks!

I replied with the following...

Trysch,

I created this technique when I was 15 years old. I did not know anything about bead stitches and when I started out, I worked all my patterns diagonally. When I first put my patterns online, I did not know about the RAW. Then I was asked for patterns in the RAW, and I only found instructions for the 1 Needle technique. I saw that it would work, so I wrote up instructions for it. Later, a friend mentioned the 2 needle technique. Having never seen this technique, I started searching again. Once I found it, I realized that it was the stitch I had been using all along (just diagonally).

"Why is this a better way than just going straight up and down the piece????"

I can't say it is a better way, most patterns you will find work either side to side or straight up and down. This is just how my patterns were created.

To work the pattern straight up and down, you would need to use the Loom or Square stitch. The bead recommended for this pattern does not work as well with these stitches, and using a different stitch could cause the finished work to look slightly squished (due to how the beads lay out with different stitches).

Thanks for asking this question, I have thought about it off and on and just have never written down an answer. I hope this does answer your question. Please feel free to send me any other questions you might think of.

Happy Beading,
Shell

Then I started thinking that a visual image might show this better. So, I did up one of my patterns, Thumbelina, to show how it would look if beaded up in the following...

First, the original bmp image (enlarged) that I used to create the pattern.

----- The Advantage to the Diagonal Right Angle Weave -----

When used with round faceted beads, it creates a beautiful piece that matches your image. Another advantage is that you can convert various needle work patterns into bead work patterns.

Examples:

Tammy Chevalier created the following two bead works from Latch Hook Patterns...

Tammy's Frog Tammy's Butterfly

Cassie Kerg created the following Dragon from a Needle Point Pattern...

Cassie's Dragon

This pattern is from Making Miniature Chinese Rugs and Carpets By Carol Phillipson (page 36, the Dragon Pillar Rug).

The most difficult part of converting a pattern is deciding what color to use and where to use it. Right now there are only 16 colors available in the size of bead I like to use. You can view these colors at...

It is quite amazing what one can do with 16 colors though. Just look around this site. All the patterns are created using only these 16 colors. I am, however, looking into adding colors. I have 2 colors I am looking into right now, and as faceted beads become more popular I am sure more colors will be made available.

----- Doily Instructions -----

I wanted to have this up by now, but I had some unforeseen circumstances and am hoping to have it up and ready soon.
